In response to the devastating effects of the ongoing El-Nino rains, President William Ruto has assured Kenyans that the government has implemented both short and long-term measures to mitigate the impact. The President expressed his concern over the loss of 70 lives and the displacement of 36,160 households across the country due to the relentless rains.

During a meeting with multi-agency emergency response teams at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto disclosed that Sh2.4 billion has been allocated to provide immediate relief, particularly in the form of food, to those affected by the rains. The funds aim to address the pressing needs of displaced persons and communities grappling with the aftermath of the severe weather conditions.

The flood situation has been particularly dire in various counties, with Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Tana River, and Mombasa among the hardest-hit areas. These regions have faced widespread destruction of infrastructure, including roads and bridges, making access to essential services challenging.

In Wajir and Mandera, heavy rainfall has led to severe flooding, causing displacement and loss of life. The flooding has not only affected residential areas but also disrupted critical transportation routes, hampering the delivery of supplies and emergency response efforts.

Isiolo, situated along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, has experienced rising water levels, leading to flooding in low-lying areas. The impact on communities in these regions has been significant, with homes, farms, and businesses submerged, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Tana River has also witnessed the adverse effects of the El-Nino rains, with damaged roads and bridges impeding movement and hindering the distribution of aid to affected populations.

President Ruto's announcement of the financial allocation underscores the government's commitment to providing timely and effective assistance to those affected by the ongoing flood crisis.
